WHAT IS LEAP?
Learners Early Access Program
This program is dedicated to providing unique opportunities for students seeking pathways to higher education and those looking to experience university life during their high school years. LEAP offers students in their third year of high school the chance to earn Algoma University credits within Academic year while maintaining a connection with their high school. Additionally, LEAP welcomes other eligible recent high school graduates and even young individuals who have already obtained a university degree, yet are still interested in studying abroad. The program supports students in their transition to university, guiding them toward successful enrollment at Algoma University and ensuring their academic success through collaborative participation.
HISTORY OF LEAP
Currently, Algoma University is actively implementing the LEAP program at its Brampton campus for students from the Peel District School Board (PDSB) and Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board (DPCDSB). Since 2018, the LEAP program has been offered in collaboration with local school boards in the Sault Ste. Marie (SSM) area, offering early admission initiatives, undergraduate preparatory enrollment and learning plans for students.

The LEAP program provides eligible students with both preparatory admission notices and conditional undergraduate acceptance letters. Preparatory centers are established at various high schools or university campuses in China, allowing students to experience the atmosphere of future university studies in advance.

Admission is possible without IELTS or TOEFL! For students with basic English skills, bilingual instruction is available during both the preparatory and lower undergraduate years. For those with a strong foundation in English, instruction is conducted entirely in English. Tailored teaching methods are employed to help dedicated students complete the LEAP program. Upon completion, they are exempt from language exams and may proceed to the first-year undergraduate courses at the Algoma University Toronto campus!

Algoma University is a well-known Canadian public university ranked in the top 20, offering high-quality education. Undergraduate tuition is about 20,000 CAD/year, and the total tuition for three 3 years is comparable to just 1 year at other more expensive universities. The cost of living at the Algoma University Toronto campus is 1,500 CAD/month.

Through the LEAP Program, students may pursue both undergraduate and master‘s degrees at Algoma University. Undergraduates from Canadian public universities or graduate programs are eligible for open work permits and can apply for Canadian immigration. Sault Ste. Marie is a designated Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) city, chosen by the Canadian government in 2019 as one of the pilot project cities suitable for the employment and settlement of new immigrants. This program provides a fast-track pathway for immigrating to Canada at the city’s sole university. Algoma students who reside in Sault Ste. Marie for a minimum of 16 months during their last two years have the opportunity to be eligible within 18 months of graduation with a job offer through the RNIP. This pathway allows them to obtain Canadian Permanent Residency without prior work experience.

Algoma University makes a special effort to accept the credits of all transfer students. The university collaborates with numerous institutions in Ontario, allowing students to transfer the maximum number of credits to complete their undergraduate studies in the shortest time possible.

Assistance will be provided to students admitted to this preparatory program in obtaining the required proof of funds for the visa, aiming to ensure that eligible students can smoothly enroll in the program.

LEAP courses offer flexible start dates with registration available four times a year in January, March, May, and September.

High school sophomore, Part-time or full-time enrollment in the OSSD
High school freshman, Part-time or full-time enrollment in the OSSD
After Grade 11 and Grade 12 are in process, with grades in both first and second years not lower than 65%.
Applicants who have not met the English proficiency requirements are required to take the ESL test.

Applicants with a high school diploma or post-secondary degrees/diplomas, whose average grades are not less than 65%.
Students eligible for the LEAP Preparatory Program at Algoma University, who meet both admission criteria, will have the opportunity to earn credits for two university courses during the preparatory study of Algoma University.

High school graduates without English language scores and individuals with diplomas from technical schools, colleges or universities can undergo a pre-degree program lasting approximately 6-10 months. Upon successful completion, they are eligible to (1) obtain the Canadian OSSD course grades,(2) receive the Canadian high school diploma,(3) earn credits for the Algoma University pre-degree program, and (4)formally gain admission to the corresponding undergraduate programs at Algoma University.
Note: Students with immigration prerequisites in the northern region must reside in Sault Ste. Marie for a minimum of 16 months in their last two years by the RNIP Northern Pilot Immigration Program requirements. Students without immigration prerequisites in the northern region may choose not to change campus.
