GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS FOR ONTARIO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS


To achieve an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), students must fulfill the following criteria:

  • Earn 18 Compulsory Credits 

  • Earn 12 Optional Credits 

  • Pass the Literacy Test (OSSLT).

  • Earn at least two Online Learning Credits

  • Complete a minimum of 40 hours of Community Involvement Activities

COMPULSORY CREDIT BREAKDOWN

    • English: 4 credits, one per grade.

    • Mathematics: 3 credits, with at least one in Grade 11 or 12.

    • Science: 2 credits.

    • Canadian History: 1 credit in Grade 10.

    • Canadian Geography: 1 credit in Grade 9.

    • The Arts: 1 credit.

    • Health and Physical Education: 1 credit.

    • French as a Second Language: 1 credit.

    • Career Studies: 0.5 credit.

    • Civics and Citizenship: 0.5 credit.

COMPULSORY CREDITS BREAKDOWN

    • Group 1: Languages, social sciences, and more.

    • Group 2: Arts, business studies, and physical education.

    • Group 3: Sciences, computer studies, and technological education.

GROUP 1,2, AND 3 COMPULSORY CREDITS

    • English Language Learners may count up to three ESL/ELD credits towards their English compulsory credits.

    • Community Involvement: Students must complete 40 hours of approved activities, starting the summer before Grade 9.

    • Online Learning Requirement: Starting with the 2020-21 school year, students entering Grade 9 are required to complete at least two credits through online coursework to fulfill their graduation requirements. For families seeking alternatives, an opt-out provision is available, allowing for flexibility in meeting this requirement.

FUTURE CHANGES

Starting September 2024, a technological education credit in Grade 9 or 10 will be added to the compulsory credits, making it 19 compulsory credits and 11 optional credits. This change applies to students entering Grade 9 in September 2024.
