HABITS OF SUCCESS

Cultivating Lifelong Success: The Power of Habits

In our personalized learning environment, we prioritize the comprehensive development of our students, focusing on both their academic capabilities and their social and emotional learning (SEL). This dual emphasis prepares our students not only for academic achievements but also for a successful, resilient life ahead. Our approach to fostering the Habits of Success is derived from a deep commitment to nurturing these essential social and emotional skills.

What Are Habits of Success?

The Habits of Success are critical social and emotional competencies that enable students to excel in both academic endeavours and life beyond the classroom. Grounded in the Building Blocks for Learning framework developed by Dr. Brooke Stafford-Brizard and Turnaround for Children (2016), this method encompasses years of research into a cohesive strategy for SEL, covering five pivotal categories:

  • Cultivating skills such as attachment, stress management, and self-regulation.

  • Enhancing capabilities like self-awareness, relationship skills, and executive functions.

  • Developing positive mindsets including growth mindset, self-efficacy, sense of belonging, and seeing the relevance of school in one's life.

  • Building resilience, agency, and academic tenacity.

  • Encouraging self-direction, curiosity, and a clear sense of purpose.

Our educational model places a strong emphasis on the communal and relational aspects of learning. It recognizes that effective learning takes place within the dynamic social context of the classroom, supported by a network of relationships students form with teachers, peers, and mentors.

The foundation of Our Approach

The selection of the 16 Habits of Success was meticulously based on their alignment with the child’s growth as a learner, their measurability over time, and the substantial evidence of their impact on future college and career success. This ensures a grounded and impactful approach to education.

The Importance of Social and Emotional Learning

Recognizing the varied experiences and paths of each student, the Habits of Success framework provides educators with a thoughtful and responsive way to support all students, including those who have encountered challenges or adverse experiences. It’s about equipping our students with the necessary skills to navigate through life's challenges, foster meaningful relationships, and pursue their ambitions with tenacity and resilience.

At our school, we guide each student on their unique journey, integrating cognitive, social, and emotional learning. This comprehensive development prepares them not only for academic excellence but also for a fulfilling and successful life. By focusing on these foundational habits, we aim to unlock each child’s full potential, creating a nurturing environment where every student is prepared to make a positive difference in the world.
